Why Dingabats* is Proud to Be FSC-Certified AND 100% Vegan

Here at Dingbats* Notebooks, we take our responsibility to the environment seriously. We don’t believe that the planet, ecosystems, and animals should suffer because of human existence, and we strive to be as sustainable and responsible in our practices as possible.

That’s why all of our notebooks are certified vegan by The V-Label EU (the only notebook to have this label!), which means no animals are harmed or exploited on the production of our notebooks. Instead of using leather for our covers or toxic PVC, we use degradable faux leather to give a luxury finish, without the cruelty.

Dingbats* are the first (and only) notebook to receive the V-Label — an achievement we’re exceptionally proud of. By being V-Label EU certified, we are highlighting our commitment to reducing harm. The V-Label is the only independent vegan label in the EU, meaning products with the V-Label have been independently verified as being 100% vegan, so consumers can be confident that brands aren’t trying to mislead them.

The V-Label EU was created by the European Vegetarian Union

All V-Label products must contain no animals, parts of animals, or animal byproducts, and must not be created with the help of animals in anyway. They also must be free from GMOs, and where possible use organic raw ingredients.

Our pledge to the planet goes deeper than just being vegan, however. All paper in Dingbats* Notebooks is FSC-certified.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an organisation that promotes sustainable forestry all around the world. Any product that is FSC-certified meets the FSC’s strict standards and has been independently certified.

But what actually is FSC-certified paper, and why is it so important to us here at Dingbats*? FSC-certified paper is typically composed of virgin tree fibres, rather than recycled materials. But unlike traditionally manufactured paper, FSC-certified paper is sourced from well-managed, sustainable forests that replant new trees for every tree harvested.

FSC-certified products must go through a ‘chain of custody’ from the forest to the manufacturer to the merchant to the printer to make sure the whole manufacturing chain is sustainable. That means that it’s not just our paper that’s green, it’s our whole product and process — even the water used to produce the paper is returned to the rivers cleaner than when it was taken out.

The FSC-accreditation also includes economic and social responsibilities, including maintaining and enhancing the economic and social well-being of workers, upholding Indigenous Peoples’ legal and customary rights to land and resources, and promoting economic well-being in local communities.

Deforestation and damage to our environment are serious issues that require serious human intervention to fix. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 18 million acres of forest are lost each year, and up to 28,000 species are expected to become extinct by the next quarter of the century due to deforestation. As much as we love producing beautiful, high-quality notebooks, we’d never want to do it at the expense of our beautiful planet.

We at Dingbats* are just one small company — and you are just one consumer. But together, if we all pledge to do more to protect the environment, we can go a long way to saving the planet.

We’ve recently launched the Earth Collection to help promote environmentalism. The Earth Collection is designed to highlight the fragile global ecosystems that are being threatened by human activity. We’re launching three notebooks in total — the Serengeti notebook, the Great Barrier Reef notebook, and the Yasuni notebook. Each notebook is dedicated to a specific ecosystem that is in danger, and the collection aims to raise awareness of the damage we’re doing to these precious environments.

You can buy the Earth Collection online now.
